DISTRIBUTION AND CHARACTERISTIC OF LAND, THE SAGO PALM (Metroxylon Spp.) HABITAT IN INDONESIA

ABSTRACT

Sago palm (Metroxylon Spp.) is one of the important and strategic crops of Indonesia. Product of sago palm is not only starch as sources of carbohydrate of food stuff beside rice, corn and cassava, but also for basic material of industries such as paper, plywood, hardboard and also food industries. Habitat of sago palm is mostly in wetland area. results of observation indicate that the sago palm grow in the fresh water marshes land with hydromorphic soils. Geographic position of the fresh water marshes land generally in the fan lowland, the boundary of sloping area to the flat area. In Indonesia cultivation of sago palm is still rare. The sago palm mostly wildly grow in the wetland region of east Sumatera, from Aceh to South Sumatera; West, Central, and South Kalimantan; North Sulawesi, Gorontalo, Makasar, Maluku Archipelago, and Papua.
