ABSTRACT

Mineralogical characteristic of the (potential) acid sulphate soils were studied. Soil sample from 4 soil profiles were taken from every sequence of the land management system of the Banjarese (SPLOB) in Barambai, South Kalimantan. The result indicated that clay mineralogical composition of the soils underneath the pet layer was kaolinite, mica, mica-smectite and mixed layers. In addition, the soils contained quartz and marcasite. The kaolinit, mica and mica-smectite were related to the sediment materials which are soil materials, mean while the sediment materials were inherited from granite schist, dinamometamorphic granite and tonalite in the hinterland. During the weathering process, the mica was transformed into mica smectite.

Keywords: potential acid sulphate soils, clay mineralogy, Kalimantan.
