ABSTRACT

A study of the quality of irrigation water in potential acid sulphate soil has been conducted in Karya Tani village, Barambai, South Kalimantan. Water sample were taken from every sequence of the land management system for physical and chemical analysis. The result showed that reclamation of potential acid sulphate soil from gelam forest to agricultural land should be planned precisely, including the water management system. Maintaining the quality of irrigation water and the pyrite layer depth in reduction condition were two importance ways to obtain high rice production in potential acid sulphate soil. The water analysis data showed that irrigation water having pH more than 5.5 would give relatively good rice production while water having pH less than 3 gave a bad ones. Irrigation water from gelam forest had good water properties for supporting rice production. On the other hand, irrigation water from Barito river had a high pH but at the same time contained much Na and Mg that can increase the electrical conductivity of the irrigation water.
