SYNTHESIS OF ARTIFICIAL ZEOLITE FROM COAL FLY ASH IN POWER PLANT

Nelson Sembriring and Suwardi (1996)

ABSTRACT

Synthesis of artificial zeolite from coal fly ash in power plant. Power plant using coal generate a large of coal fly ash as waste material. Although the conventional effective methods for utilization of coal fly ash have been conducted such as for reclamation, as raw materials of cement, etc., most of them were disposed by dumping, there for, it contributes the environmental pollution seriously. In Japan, coal fly ash as waste product was applied as secondary resource, such as artificial zeolite. The sample was pretreated by using a High Intensity Wet Separator (HIWS) for the removal of iron and magnetic material which is known as the undesirable component for the synthesis of zeolite. The synthesis of zeolite was carried out under the various concentration of NaOH (1-4 M) and reaction times in the temperature of reaction at 100oC. Evidently, the cation exchange capacity (CEC) value and the efficiency of heavy-metal ions removal of the artificial zeolite were greater than that of natural zeolite.
